Weekly Design Inspiration: Wall Textures

As we move out of the pandemic and into summer, many of us are feeling more adventurous and ready to take on daring design choices. Although not all of us have been able to do complete remodels, making small changes, like wall coverings and techniques, can drastically change the mood of a room. Whether your aesthetic speaks to your love of minimalism, the 70s, or the country, there are wall textures that suit every style.

Paint the Town

One of the most versatile options for wall textures is to use a painted technique to achieve a certain texture, whether that be a velvety sheen, a rustic stucco, or an industrial concrete. The final look will change depending on the medium, what technique you use to apply the medium, and the colour used with the medium. For those looking to nod to the Spanish style, use terracotta and creamy whites. For those inspired by the cityscape, use cool tones with a smoother hand.

I am so excited to be the first Canadian retailer to offer JH Wall Paints. This natural lime and mineral paint was specifically designed to mirror the aesthetic and health benefits of Venetian plaster while keeping it simple to apply using a brush and roller. Ideal for interior or exterior surfaces, Lime Wall Paint can be applied to drywall, plaster, stucco, masonry, wood and previously painted surfaces. The beautiful shades offered will elevate your living space and create a designer look to every room.

Knock on Wood

Get groovy with it and accept the fact that wood paneling is back and better than ever. There are so many ways to interpret the trend, and it depends on both the architecture of your home and the desired style. Many modern homes are injecting a bit of warmth by using narrow strips of wood to reference the wood paneling of a bygone era. These strips can break up a wall and accentuate the height and/or width of a space. Another interpretation is to play off of mid-century architecture and use warm woods in wide planks. The layout of the planks can be used as a way to highlight angular shapes within the home.

Grasscloth Movement

Travel to the country without ever leaving your home by using touches of grasscloth wall coverings. The woven nature of the texture feels distinctly handmade. However, this one is best kept away from the kiddos or messy adults. Use it with wood, stone, and creamy whites to achieve a weathered, vintage feel. Grasscloth also sets itself apart from wallpaper by adding that 3D element, wrapping your room in a cocoon-like feeling.

Design Tip: If you’re looking to add another element to a kitchen, mudroom or bathroom, consider using tile on the walls. Use stacked, linear tiles for a contemporary look, or dabble in handmade painted tiles for a more rustic, authentic look.
