Weekly Design Inspiration: Light the Way

Hallways are the unsung heroes of our homes. The pathways to late-night snacks and the great outdoors, they are the glue that holds it all together. Yet, we don’t often think about the impact that they can have on our overall design. Obviously, the more pressing projects with the bigger budgets will always come first, but big changes don’t have be costly. Switching out the lighting in your hallway is a simple change that can make all the difference. Whether that means embedded lighting, regal sconces, or scalloped lighting, it’s up to you what statement you’d like to make.

Find the Way

Some of us may find ourselves creeping in after a late-night movie, or to go check out the fridge during a midnight craving. On those occasions, why wake up the house when you can enjoy dimly lit, wayfinding lighting that lines the hallways? Whether integrated into the ground or ceiling, these non-intrusive fixtures will barely be noticeable during the day, ensuring clean lines throughout the home. At night, these strips will glow, preventing any late-night tumbles.

Great Sconce!

For a look that embraces the viewer, consider scones instead of ceiling fixtures. The style adds instant formality to a space, transporting you to a time gone by. Sconces work especially well for those blessed with wide hallways, as the fixtures match the grandeur of the space. The symmetry of the sconces is also reassuring and classical. Try to choose fixtures that speak to your personality, as to avoid the hotel-look that generic fixtures can have.

Beam Me Up

When it comes to the contemporary style, don’t settle on pot lights. They can wash out the space, providing no point of emphasis. Instead, look for pendants or flush-mount fixtures that have sleek lines and display a defined scallop. The targeted beams of light display a rhythm that flows down the hallway, again making it easier for wayfinding. The type of fixtures you’ll find will likely go best with contemporary and mid-century modern homes.

Design Tip: If you have any art pieces that you would like to display, lighting is the key to showcasing it properly. Adding fixtures and/or coves to display canvases and sculptures with proper lighting will make the piece more beautiful than it already is and adds interest to the walkway.
