Weekly Design Inspiration: The Modern Man

Lately we have found ourselves being so inspired by incorporating masculine elements into our designs. There is something so comforting about the colours and scale of masculine design that we love to use in rooms like the great room or the office. However, we can appreciate that masculinity can come in all sorts of forms so today we are taking a look at some of our favourite masculine design styles.

WHISKEY COWBOY

We have definitely been seeing a shift toward a more rustic interpretation of masculine style. There are ways to communicate a masculine style without making it so obvious. Don’t put those finishing touches on that add a polish; leave materials in a more natural state. Think of unlacquered wood, stone, and understated colours. Also be sure to play with scale; large-scale features that command the attention of the room are a great way to signal grandeur without leaning into glamour.

GIN GENTLEMAN

We will always love the classic old-school style of the Gin Gentleman. This is the classic interpretation of masculine style; plaid, leather, and tones of navy. In order to take this look to the next level, commit to things that go beyond the basics, such as coffered ceilings, open library storage, and paneling. Part of what defines this style is its references to the past; whether that’s through vintage photos or classic pieces of furniture

WINE AND DINE

For those of us who prefer to balance the masculine and the feminine and add in a dash of moodiness; we present to you the Wine and Dine. These are spaces that have a distinct artistic flair that are heavily influenced by art and vintage touches. Merlot hues work with wood tones in order to create a cellar-like atmosphere. Open storage works well against dark backdrops for dramatic effect!

Design Tip: When in doubt, always look back to historical references for a more authentic feeling; grand Victorian homes, old cowboy ranches, and New York penthouses all have deep histories that you can draw from!
