Weekly Design Inspiration: Southern to the Max
Now that we can start to enjoy our time outside once more, our minds wander to the romance and the charm of the south. So many design aesthetics have been greatly influenced by the extravagance of the south and we want to introduce you to its newest trend: country maximalism. It mixes the tradition of southern homes with the rustic nature of country homes, all while using the maximalist approach seen all over Austin, Georgia, and Charleston.
Bedtime
With this style, bedrooms are not just where you rest at the end of the day, but where you create a scene for your guests, with all amenities within reach. Ceiling treatments are a great way to communicate the importance of the room, and you will often see coordinating wallpaper, linens, and lampshades which harken back to traditional southern stylings. Four-poster beds and antique nightstands build up the stature of the room.
The Final Curtain
We don’t often associate bathrooms with the pomp and circumstance that other rooms often receive. However, country maximalism has set out to change that. Freestanding pieces speak to the historic aspect of the style. Lighting and plumbing should have ornate details that give the room a sense of formality. One of the key style indicators is the use of fabric. Window treatments and decorative bath curtains are ways to add volume to the room.
Dine In
We adore the use of a formal dining room. It sets the precedent that meals are something to be shared together but that doesn’t mean that your room has to feel stuffy or precious. Consider switching up your dining room by putting it in another room, mixing period styles, or adding some fun paint! Having a centerpiece or glassware on display is a great way to pay homage to the southern formality.
Design Tip: If you don’t own a historic home, that doesn’t mean you can’t get this style! But first, invest in some crown moulding and baseboards to give your home that southern character.
