Weekly Design Inspiration: Old School

We could not be more excited that vintage finds are finding their way into our homes! Not only does vintage mean that you’re recycling perfectly good pieces but it inevitably leads to a more curated, layered design. If you’re not sure where to start with scooping up some preloved pieces then read on as we let you know what to look for.

P.S. be sure to stop by our store to shop our vintage collection.

Wood-land

Anything wood is usually a good investment. Research furniture brands and joinery details so that you know what you’re looking for when you are out shopping! Also don’t be afraid if it’s not the colour you love; lots of pieces can be sanded and stained if you want to go darker! We love dressers, tables and hutches since they usually have silhouettes that we don’t see as much anymore!

art curator

Unless you’re an art collector you’ll porbably be pleasantly surprised at the art you can find when secondhand shopping. Although the pieces may not have a famous name attached to them they are usually very well done! Personally we like landscapes since the countryside nature of the subject lends itself to the hand-me-down look. Don’t worry about replacing the frame either; mismatched is in!

let’s dish

It’s a conversation that families all over have; no one uses special dishware anymore! Since we live in a more casual society than our parents or grandparents did we have also eliminated the need for things like fine china. Now you can find entire sets or odds and ends at a vintage store for next to nothing! We love to pick up pretty dishes whenever we get the chance and bring them out when we have people over. It’s a great conversation starter and shows your guests that you’ve thought of them!

Design Tip: If you want to get serious about vintage shopping then you’ll need to study up on construction methods and how to do repairs! You can find great deals on pieces as long as you’re willing to put in some extra effort.
