Weekly Design Inspiration: Japandi

As globalization becomes more and more prevalent in every industry, we have the privilege of experiencing design trends from many countries and seeing the beauty in the differences between us. This could not be more true with the Japandi trend. Inspired by the country’s traditional affinity for simplicity and minimalism, this trend feels homey yet crisp and clean.

Simplicity & Soups

Kitchens are almost impossible to keep clean when you lead busy lives; something that we are all guilty of. However, when you consider minimalism from the beginning, and incorporate it in every step of the way, overcrowded kitchens can become tranquil spaces. The use of neutrals, wood, and stone all come together to create an oasis. Try to balance hidden storage with negative space for a breathable look. Integrated handles can also reduce clutter.

Delicacy & Dining

For many of us, dining rooms are where we have great conversations over a glass of wine and a meal with our loved ones. What better way to honour that time with each other than to be very intentional with what you are putting in that space. Choose meaningful objects for display, keep the colour palette within airy earth tones, and choose clean lines for a nice visual flow.

Bare Necessities & Beds

The bedroom is the ultimate space for relaxation and rejuvenation. Warm woods, light linens, and transparent materials all add to the feeling of levity. Architectural lighting will surely enhance the design. Japandi pairs well with styles like mid-century modern, but you can also use this personal space to dive deeper into the culture, and choose Japanese items like wall tapestries, dividers, and floor pillows to finish off the space.

Design Tip: With the online market being more vibrant than ever, try to choose handmade items from Japanese artisans to honour the style but also give a unique look to your home
