Weekly Design Inspiration: I'll (Night)stand by You
This week we’re looking at a piece that has started to get some well-deserved recognition: the nightstand. The truth is that most of us ask a lot from our nightstands; they need to be a beverage station, a table, a bookcase, and so much more. Since everyone uses them in such different ways we thought that we would highlight some of our favourite looks that we have seen across the internet from dresser-style, to integrated, to mismatched!
Dress(er) it up
Personally we are big fans of this look here at CPD; we like to lean into the fact that many of us have more clutter than we would like to admit so it’s best to have a place to fit it all. Although the style can vary widely, the piece is generally wider and higher off the ground and features mainly, or only, drawers. Usually the silhouette has flourishes on it that speak to a more traditional style.
If you love this look, we suggest pairing it with a lamp like this and a tray like this!
built-in beauty
For those of us who want the bed to be that star of the room consider doing an integrated nightstand. This look uses the bed as the jumping off point with a custom headboard. Integrated nightstands are then built-in to the headboard and can sometimes be camouflage in or have a minimalist, floating look to them. If you don’t want to spend a fortune on custom millwork, have the wall, headboard, and nightstand all in the same colour.
When doing a more modern look we recommend going with accents like this carafe and this lamp!
preloved perfection
If you’re a vintage lover like we are then we’re sure you’ll want to try out a preloved look for your nightstands! We think that since your bedroom is so personal, this is the perfect place to put something that means something to you, whether it came from your grandmother or just a really great flea market! Since these well-loved pieces are sometimes missing their match we suggest embracing the unique nature of pieces and instead go with pieces that complement each other. You want them to look different enough so that people don’t think that you were ever trying to match them!
To go along with this devil-may-care attitude, we suggest looking at this vase and this lamp!
Design Tip: Unless you plan on keeping a perfectly curated home, don’t plan on having a vignette on your nightstands at all times. Pick a candle, a vase, and a lamp to stay there and put everything else away to avoid a cluttered look!
