Weekly Design Inspiration: Here Comes the Sun(room)
We try to love all seasons equally, but there’s no denying that we try to spend our summer days out in the sun as much as possible. However, due to our climate, we are constantly battling against the mosquitoes come sunset. That’s why we love to add a sunroom to our designs whenever possible. To some, it seems like a luxury, but when done correctly you can make this 3-season room one of your most-used spaces! Today we’re showing you what we’ve been pinning for sunroom inspiration including lake house getaways, southern spaces, and English cottage retreats!
SOUTHERN PORCH STYLE
Just because we don’t live in the South doesn’t mean that we don’t experience some of the same sweltering days in the sun! That’s why southern design inevitably makes its way up north and into our homes. What we love about southern sunrooms is that they are warm and inviting; a white backdrop is not only practical but it allows your plants to take centre stage. One characteristic of the southern sunroom is a large light fixture. If you want to emulate that easy breezy feeling, install ceiling fans to circulate the air while simultaneously nodding to the past. Pastels and wicker are also a classic addition to any southern-inspired home!
CABIN STYLE
As Canadians, we will always have a special place in our hearts for lake homes. That’s why we love the lake house sunroom. Wood tones, plaids, and florals are the name of the game. The focus of this style is to truly feel integrated with the outdoors. Expansive windows with minimal trim harkens back to the simple cottage style. Additionally, don’t be afraid to deck out the sunroom in an exterior finish like shingles. This will add to the feeling of being in nature without all of the pesky bugs. The best colours for this style would be hunger green and navy, combined with multiple wood tones.
ENGLISH COTTAGE STYLE
The English cottage sunroom is all about bringing the indoors out. Eclectic pairings thrive here where the sunroom feels lived-in and not too precious. Accessories can include anything from bistro tables to artwork to lamps. Additionally, in this style it is a-ok to bring out the upholstered furniture. Part of the charm of the English cottage style is that it feels as though pieces have been passed down through generations and have found their way into your home. You can also view it as an extension of the English garden, which is known for its organized chaos! Opt for toned-down colours and jewel tones to get the place just right.
Design Tip: Sunrooms can have different window styles depending on how you want to use the space. If you would like to maximize the breeze and don’t mind the rain coming in, go for all-screen windows. If you want to control the breeze but still love the minimal look, go for a double-hung window. There are so many options and ways to communicate your home’s style through the windows!
