Weekly Design Inspiration: Going Global

Sometimes we can find ourselves so preoccupied with what we are putting in our homes that we forget that we should put a little bit of ourselves in them as well. With the warmer weather just around the corner, you can be sure to see more and more people getting back out there and traveling! This week, we’re talking about how to let your travels be your (design) guide.

Living the Life

The living room is where you’ll enjoy countless nights together with friends and family, so naturally this is where you should provide a visual introduction of yourselves to your guests! Dens and living rooms tend to also be the biggest rooms in the house, so play with scale by adding a large mirror or tapestry. Put down a Moroccan rug that tells a story to act as a conversation piece. If you’re worried about mixing and matching too much, use symmetry to calm down the space.

Dine in

Dining rooms are an area where you can really have fun. Since they don’t get as much wear and tear as a kitchen or a living room, add some extra elements that speak to how special the room is, like paintings and antiques. A bold paint color might be the perfect backdrop to set the mood for your Turkish chairs. Choose a dining set that speaks to a specific era or country to keep on theme!

Put it to Bed

No matter where you travel, sleeping in your own bed is always the best. However, that doesn’t mean that you can't bring your travels back home. Reading lights, benchs, and curtains are all ways to add a subtle nod to your experiences. If you’re not ready to go all in, stick with white sheets as a place for your eye to rest.

Design Tip: There is no one way to go for the global style. The key to its charm and complexity is to layer in pieces from different backgrounds and periods. When possible, please support the local economy of the places you’re visiting by buying from local artisans.
