Weekly Design Inspiration: Everyday Tuscan

Traditional Tuscan style may have gone out of vogue, but we love a comeback story! One of the best parts of design is that trends always come around, even if not in the same way as before. We are loving all of the contemporary takes on Tuscan design that we have been seeing; from kitchens to living rooms to the great outdoors!

Italian Cooking

Usually when we think of a Tuscan kitchen, we think of heavy millwork, deep, earthy colours, and dim lighting. With an updated outlook, you can see that some of those elements have remained. Instead of dark, detailed millwork, the new Tuscan look focuses on well-made, simple cabinets. Instead of dark, muddy colours, consider almond and burnt sienna instead. Although we still love dimmers in our kitchens, don’t be afraid to let the light in! Use rustic accent lighting as a feature.

A Stone’s Throw

What’s so amazing about this style is that it invites you in; nothing feels too precious. When discussing living rooms and dining rooms, many of us want to create spaces where everyone feels at home. Using natural materials like stone, slate, wood, and wicker will set any guest at ease. As a homage to the original style, consider using a whitewashed travertine and look for subdued earth hues in your pieces.

Courtyards and Courtship

Good design doesn’t have to stop at the hallway. At its best, a home should tell a story from start to finish. Continue your colourway and materials up the stairs for a striking backdrop. Clean lines and striking contrast colours like black and white will create contrast. With outdoor living becoming so much more a part of our lives, bring some of that Tuscan love to the backyard! Courtyards can be made with stones, slabs, and beautiful greenery. Use linens and other raw fabrics to soften up the outdoors.

Design Tip: One surefire way to keep this look from getting too intense is to add natural light wherever possible, whether that means transom windows, large patio sliders, or glass dividers inside.
