Weekly Design Inspiration: French Country Feeling
We love that the warm weather has come once again and we are ready to fling open our doors and bring the outside in! What better way to celebrate than by paying homage to the French villas that inspire us? We are so excited to explore how to design in the modern French provincial style, whether that means exterior design, a full kitchen, or even just an accent!
Take it Outside
Exterior design is one of the more permanent changes that you can make to your home so decorating it in a classic style like French country is a fairly safe bet. Muted, earthy colours are a great start. Think of almond, cream, and cinnamon paired with natural elements like stone and wood. Don’t be afraid to add European elements like a carport or a Juliet balcony.
Cooking Up Something
There are so many ways to be creative with a French kitchen. Incorporating unconventional materials like oil-rubbed bronze and reclaimed doors are a great way to achieve the lived-in look. Also don’t be afraid to bend the rules when it comes to layout. Work with existing windows, blend your kitchen and dining areas, and incorporate lots of prep space. For an added bonus, add in some Dutch doors for charm.
All in the Details
Aesthetics are most effective when they are carried throughout the home. Apply the same principles and techniques to all of the details. Use natural materials, hints of brass and gold, and draw the eye upwards when possible to create the illusion of a larger space. This is also a place to incorporate some traditional colours! Use a washed-out blue to highlight your favourite features.
Design Tip: To avoid the overly cheesy look that can often consume the French country look, try to buy authentic pieces where possible. Artificially worn and distressed pieces can quickly make a home feel too manicured.
