Weekly Design Inspiration: Fall in Love

Fall is one of the most widely-loved seasons for Canadians. The changing leaves, the crisp morning air, and the autumnal decor all contribute to the fall feeling. However, good decor is just like a good fall outfit; you need layers. Creating small vignettes throughout your space will add to the overall look and wrap guests up in the spirit of the season. Anything from wreaths, to hearths, to dining tables are all great starting points when planning your space.

Wreaths and Leaves

Wreaths are timeless pieces that are rooted in nature and feel like the perfect welcome into your home. It communicates a sense of pride in your home and sets the tone for your overall aesthetic. For fall, you have a plethora of options available to you. If you don't want to commit to any colours in particular, choose from a variety of wheats and grasses to get the look. If you feel inspired by the colour of the changing leaves, incorporate a few of them into your wreath, or dry out some seasonal flowers and berries for a similar feeling.

Home is Where the Hearth is

If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace or hearth in your home, then don’t be afraid to take advantage of it! Mantels and hearths provide endless opportunities for decoration. For natural elements, think of autumnal garlands and seasonal floral arrangements. Squashes, gourds, and candles also convey the sense of Halloween without being too committal. Also, don't be afraid to think outside the box! Baskets, blankets, and fireplace accessories all give us that cozy feeling without being strictly fall items.

Let’s Table it

No matter the season, the dining table is usually the centrepiece of the family. It’s where we can sit down and enjoy a meal with our loved ones. Fall, traditionally being the season for harvesting and eating the crops, means that the dining area holds extra meaning. When planning a table, think in 3D. Plates and cutlery are all fairly flat, so think of where you can add some flair, whether that be with napkins, floral arrangements, candles, or other found items like pinecones.

Design Tip: When decorating for fall, don’t be afraid to choose an updated autumnal colour palette. Pair plum and mustard, navy and cinnamon, or cream and oxblood for a fresh take on fall!
