Weekly Design Inspiration: Details That We're Loving!
We know that details are what make a house a home; that’s why whenever we see a design that truly stands out to us we just have to share it! Today we’re showing you what we have been loving lately which includes everything from tile work to wall treatments to specialty cabinets. Some of these can be DIY projects and others may require a professional, but all of them can be a small project for those times when you just want to freshen up a space.
Terrific tile work
We are loving how tiles are being used lately; we see lots of people using tile as if it were a tapestry which really blurs the line between hard and soft elements. We have been obsessed with hand-painted tiles specifically since they communicate a sense of artisan craftsmanship. Another tile trend that we’ve got our eye on is tile work with borders and features. It reminds us of old family homes with rich histories. We’re also seeing tile in some unconventional spots like the entryway which is perfect for busy families who still want their home to feel intentional. Tile can be easily wiped off when met with muddy shoes and playful dogs!
wonderful walls
Another way to infuse some character into the home is to add wall treatments. There are so many ways to go with this; you could pick a wall covering with texture, such as grasscloth or plaster. You could also look at your walls as if they were another piece of furniture. Apply fabric panels to the wall and finish them off with molding or furniture nails. You could also take the room back in time; use a wallcovering and finish it off with borders and trim around the perimeter of the room or use it to highlight special features in the home.
magnificent millwork
One of our favourite parts of designing the home will always be the millwork because there are infinite possibilities when it comes to its design. We have hundreds of years to look back on and gain inspiration, and yet we still feel like we’re seeing innovative ideas all of the time! We saw a lattice kitchen recently that was a showstopper; it’s the perfect way to communicate an elevated design while still having its roots firmly planted in country charm. Another trend we have been seeing pick back up is the use of curtained cabinets. It’s yet another way to marry the idea of hard and soft elements. It’s especially effective when used on a wall of cabinetry as a way to inject some texture into the space without it feeling out of place.
Design Tip: In general, if you’re looking to add more details to your home, think about where your home feels flat; countertop edges, furniture feet, moulding, and walls are a great place to start!
