Weekly Design Inspiration: Bonkers for Bauhaus

Although the Bauhaus school closed almost a century ago the style lives on being interpreted and reinterpreted through the eyes of modern living. However, the style has always been steeped in modernity which is likely why it’s still so popular today. Vintage is always best but reproductions are always coming out if you’re shopping for new! We love how this style can be mixed and matched with other styles whether it’s your living room, dining room, or bathroom.

Living Rooms

The Bauhaus living room speaks to the post-war time period in which the style originated. The simplicity of colours and the practicality of forms is seen when you observe the straight-legged, straight-backed sofas and chairs. Abstract art is a staple of great Bauhaus design which perfectly complements the muted palette of the look. Look for barely-there furniture that doesn’t compete for living room real-estate.

Dining Rooms

Dining rooms with sparkling chrome are usually done in reference to Bauhaus design. No-nonsense chairs and tables create a look that is completely unfussy. Trademark materials like cane and wood speak to the style’s insistence of simple materials. Black, brown, white, and burgundy are all colours that feature prominently in the aesthetic. Have fun with lighting options and sideboards to finish the room off!

Bathrooms

For those of us who hate bathroom clutter, consider a Bauhaus design. The simplicity in the design is entirely minimalist, with bare bones lighting and tiled walls. This easy-to-clean look can either be done in a muted palette or in rich tones that speak to the depth of German design. Pedestal sinks and frameless mirrors are the jewelry that adorn the room, though understated at first glance.

Design Tip: If you want to mix styles, choose lighting, textiles, and accessories that come from looks with softer lines. Traditional is the opposite to the Bauhaus look which makes it a great companion style.
