Weekly Design Inspiration: Ad-Dress the Bed

So much of our time is spent in bed; sleeping, reading, and lounging. Yet, we often forget about the importance of how your bed makes you feel. By dressing your bed, and making it a part of your routine, you can drastically improve your mood! We’ve assembled some jumping off points for you to consider, including everything from layering, bed frames, and more formal dressings.

Layer Up!

As Canadians, we know how necessary layering our clothes is to survive the ever-changing elements. Yet, we don’t often apply the same principles to our bedding. In the winter, consider using everything from top sheets, duvets, quilts, and throws to layer your bed. Bonus points for mixing in heftier textures like faux fur or wool. In the summer, simply switch up the weights. Instead of opting for flannels and furs, use cotton and linen sheets and blankets instead.

Use the Platform

For those looking for a more streamlined look, invest in a platform bed. Platform beds usually sit lower to the ground, which in turn makes them look more contemporary and adds a youthful vibrance to the space. Additionally, since there is no space underneath the bed, the room looks less visually cluttered. For those in small spaces and apartments, find a platform bed with sleek storage incorporated into the frame.

Skirt the Issue

With trends like Grandmillennial and Urban Coastal taking hold, it’s no surprise that touches of formality have come back in unexpected ways. Bed skirts, top sheets, and accent pillows are all ways to communicate a finished aesthetic, but these traditional items have become more relaxed over time. Again, texture is what can set your look apart. For those who like light and breezy, use hemp or linen instead of a more formal cotton. Also, look for simple silhouettes. A pleat of two is just enough to achieve an understated elegance.

And remember; if you’re looking to experiment with colour, use accents such as pillows or throws.
