Weekly Design Inspiration: Well-Rounded

Curves are always celebrated at CPD, and we will take them wherever we can get them! The look isn’t just a look; it’s a feeling! We are seeing curves and swerves everywhere, from doorways to fireplaces to windows. The rounded shapes provide us with a sense of comfort and welcome us into any space. Let’s get into it!

Arch-Nemesis

Doorways are one of the areas that can have a massive impact on how a home feels. In new builds, they are often overlooked, as they can be an expensive addition to a home. But few things are as fun and as versatile as arches. They can be tiled, painted, or stylized. Consider how to emphasize the shape by using unique silhouettes like keyholes, or by drawing attention to the shape using plants or lighting.

Fire it Up!

Fireplaces are an absolute must for us. We love how they can be the heart of the home. Naturally, they are inviting and traditional. When you add rounded elements to them, they become whimsical, yet tailored. One of our favourite takes on curves right now is the chamfered edge, which works well with more rectilinear objects like fireplace inserts. Use Venetian plaster or our JH limewash paint to get that more organic, softened look.

Let There be Light!

Windows are one of the first points of interaction that people have of your house. While white PVC windows were the reigning champ for many years, we have taken a turn within the last decade. Now we see how much character windows can have, and how much the light they bring in can brighten our days. It can get expensive to have statement windows everywhere, but some of our favourite places to highlight are in the kitchen and in the den, as these are two places you’ll really be able to enjoy them. Bonus points for arched lites mimicking the shape!

Design Tip: If you’re ready to commit to the look, don’t forget that architectural elements are only the beginning. Choose furniture, lighting, plants, and accessories that have similar lines and silhouettes to keep the flow of the house.
