Weekly Design Inspiration: Wall Art - How to Introduce Your Personal Style

Art can be very personal. Whether you prefer bold colours or high contrast, clean lines or a muddy landscape, it's all a matter of preference and personal history.

So when choosing art that reflects your personality consider how you want people to feel when they are in the room. Typically, we want people to feel comfortable and there are some easy tricks to achieve that regardless of what you put on display.

Consistency is key. Buying matched frames or prints is a great way to stay consistent throughout a space. They also have the added benefit of easy symmetry. By staying consistent, you are creating a familiarity effect within your home which can lead people to feel more comfortable.

Gallery walls are a great way to fill space when you have a lot that you would like to display, such as family photos or favourite prints. To keep the wall from looking busy or eclectic, choose a simple frame and keep the spacing consistent. 2 - 3 inches is a good rule of thumb.

Patterns are everywhere and we are biologically wired to identify to them. Black and white family photos are a great way to reinforce the pattern of a gallery wall. Keeping the colours consistent is a great way to make the space feel more comfortable.

Consider shadow boxing or mounting something personal or seasonally appropriate. Fall leaves, seashells or personal mementos can be a great way to introduce your personal style and make great conversation pieces.

When choosing the size of painting to go above your mantle, go slightly larger than the width of your fireplace opening but smaller than the mantle for the most balanced appearance. I bet you didn’t know this was a tv! The Samsung Frame tv is something we use in almost every project here at Candace Plotz Design. We love that when it’s not in use, it acts as a piece of art.

Art draws your eye. For a long hallway, repeat frames at the same height to create a line of perspective that reinforces the vanishing point. This will make the space feel larger. Do the same vertically to bring your eye up to the ceiling. But remember not to go too high!

Matching paintings helps create a sense of balance and style. Hang them side by side or vertically to complete a vignette.

Wall art can act as a great focal point for your room. I love when a bold print fits perfectly in a space. Pull colour from an accent rug for a complete look.

Mounting a collection can make a wonderfully personal art piece in your dining room or kitchen. Consider a collection of nice cutting boards or vintage heirlooms.

No matter what you choose, be sure you go with artwork that speaks to you personally.
