Weekly Design Inspiration: Unconventional Solutions
It can be so easy to find yourself bogged down with the conventional design rules to the point that you find it difficult to come up with solutions for your home that don’t fit into the equation. When this happens it may be time to start embracing the unconventional solutions; things that may be a little different but actually bring out all of the best features of your home! You know that we love boosting a home’s character and that’s exactly what these solutions do.
asymmetry
Even if you’re completing a new build it can still be difficult to make everything as symmetrical as you would like. This is especially true when dealing with renovations. However, sticking to the notion that everything should be symmetrical might be limiting you. Creating an asymmetrical focal point, such as a statement fireplace, and then visually balancing it on the other side of the room, may actually speak more to the character of your home (we’re looking at you, mid-century bungalows). If you’re really struggling, think about including something that would create a visual barrier between the two spots so that you have two distinct spaces that don’t read as one asymmetrical room.
look up
So often we stop designing past the walls. We think about the floor plan and what art to hang but forget all about what happens above our heads. Ceiling treatments are often an afterthought but they can take your place from a house to home with some creative design solutions. We personally are always going to favour a wood-clad ceiling as it makes the room feel more intimate which works well for a family room. If you don’t want to splurge on that then think of another solution, like wallpaper. We love this look in the kids' room where it’s out of their reach but still whimsical and inspiring.
put it on a pedestal
Many of us love our open-concept homes and the versatility that they allow. However, there is no denying that we have to get creative when it comes to implementing pieces that don’t impede traffic flow. We still have our sculptures and plants that need a home and our dining table can’t hold any more. That’s why we love to use pedestals! They come in so many shapes and sizes so there is something for everyone. A traditional pedestal would look great in an eclectic home while a well-worn stool would be at home in a rustic setting. They take up little real estate on the floor while also adding different levels and heights in the space.
Design Tip: If you’re feeling stuck on a design problem then head over to Pinterest! Chances are that someone else has had that funny alcove or random landing and has made it work for them. Try to look past the style of the home and look objectively at the solution!
