Weekly Design Inspiration: Spanish Getaway

We always gravitate towards a home that feels like it emanates warmth which is probably why we love Spanish homes so much! The style allows for so many luxurious details; wrought iron surrounded by negative space, plastered walls, and handmade everything. We will always stop to browse a Spanish project because there are so many little ways to communicate the style. Today we’re going to walk you through some of our favourite Spanish features!

Wood(n’t) it be lovely

Part of the reason why we’re seeing so many Spanish homes online is due to the fact that the style is known for its use of dark wood tones. As we move away from grey and blonde wood, the pendulum naturally swings the other way and people love the richness of the Spanish style. These dark hues can be anything from doors and windows to ceiling beams that wrap the room. The dark wood plays off of light walls and the texture of stucco, both of which are also characteristics of a Spanish home. If you can, try to use wood that has a story to it; the wood will feel out of place if you try to use new lumber.

(wrought) Iron out the details

We love the use of wrought iron in Spanish homes because it speaks both to the masculine and the feminine elements of the style. The brutality of the metal is offset by the intricate, handmade details which creates a beautiful juxtaposition of features. There are so many ways to sneak in this detail whether it’s through spindles, light fixtures, or window grates. Similarly to the wood, the darkness of the iron is complemented by the white walls and the natural light. When designing, this is where it would be great to use a vintage piece if possible!

tile us about it

One of the things that makes Spanish style homes so appealing is the fact that they provide the home with a sense of indoor/outdoor living. Part of this is because the style uses traditionally exterior materials like stucco on the interior as well as materials that accept wear and tear, like tile. We love to use tile in our designs due to its practicality and there is something extra special about using tiles with a spanish twist. This can mean anything from a terracotta to a hand-painted tile. Tile flooring is a great choice for entryways, stairwells, and mudrooms while we embrace wall tile on everything from kitchen ceilings to wet rooms.

Design Tip: One of the easiest ways to achieve the Spanish look is to use vintage or handmade when possible; anything too new or too perfect could take us back to the days of Tuscan kitchens instead of Spanish villas!
