Weekly Design Inspiration: Sophisticated Kids' Rooms
Something that we’ve observed over the past few years is that more and more people are choosing to purchase their “forever home”. Essentially people are willing to invest in properties where they can see themselves living out the majority of their lives. Not only is this more sustainable in so many ways, but it also means that you can create memories with your family! Today we’re tackling the topic of creating a kids’ bedroom that will last them through different stages of their life.
wallpaper and wainscotting
You’ve likely noticed that wallpaper is back and better than ever. There are so many prints to choose from and a lot of them speak to a sense of childlike wonder. We’ve seen woodland creatures, fantastical flora, and more adorn the walls of kids rooms this past year and we’re obsessed. However, wallpaper is notoriously expensive and fragile. That’s why we love to pair wallpaper with something much more durable: panelling. By incorporating panelling along the lower half of the wall you’re not only saving money on wallpaper but you’re also ensuring that the walls that take the most abuse are covered.
Mix and Match
Inevitably as kids get older their tastes and interests change. However, this doesn’t mean that you should never have any fun with their spaces! In fact, we tend to go the opposite direction: throw lots of colours and patterns together. This way you can pare back the colours and swap out some prints as they grow up without having to redo the entire room. Bedding is one of the easiest ways to pack on a lot of different textiles and patterns so start there!
We are loving this duvet and this pillowcase!
A dash of Whimsy
Since we work in a creative industry we love to see kids use their imagination! That means that we also want to build them a space that is inspiring and whimsical. Wherever possible, look to add features that are imaginative without being overly juvenile. Our favourite ideas? A window seat and a canopy bed.
Pair this canopy with this lamp and you’ve got a winner.
Design Tip: In order for the kids to grow into the space use lots of toned down colours. Olive, teal, and mustard are all great options!
