Weekly Design Inspiration: Rug Combinations

Combining multiple rugs in an open concept home is no joke!

You’ll want to ensure what your rug for the living room, dining room and kitchen all work together as you’ll be seeing them all at once.

When selecting multiple area rugs, there are three key aspects to keep in mind to ensure they complement one another.

PATTERNS

If you are nervous about mixing patterns, you can always select a solid rug to start as other colours and patterns with pair nicely. That being said, pairing two patterned rugs is equally beautiful and isn’t as difficult as you may think. The key with multiple patterns is to select two opposing patterns that don’t compete with each other - like geometric and floral for example. Stripes are another great option as well.

The exception to this is space. If you have a lot of distance between the two rugs, you can more easily get away with having two area rugs that share a similar pattern.

SCALE

Like everything related to Interior Design, scale is important. Consider pairing a large scale pattern with a smaller scale.

COLOUR PALETTE

Last but never least is colour. Both rugs don’t need to be an “exact” match but they should share the same colour story. If one rug contains muted colours, the second rug should be muted as well since highly saturated colours would clash.

The best way to start is to choose a primary rug first. From there, you can pull a secondary colour from within, to help you choose your other rugs.

If all else fails, beige, ivory and grey act as neutrals and can be paired with almost any other coloured rug.

Here are a few examples of pairings to help you along & just a few of the offerings available at Candace Plotz Design.
