Weekly Design Inspiration: Read Up!

When the snow starts to fall, there are few places we would rather be than curled up with a book as the fire burns. Although modern houses don’t have as many libraries in them, we can usually find a nook or two to create a special moment where peaceful nights take place. Reading areas can be fully integrated, grouped together with furniture, or even moved outside! No matter what your design plans are, we will get you ready to read.

Benchwarmer

Plush benches surrounded by books are surely one of the most luxurious scenes that we can think of. Not to mention, they provide ample opportunities for storage both underneath the bench and surrounding it. This style of nook has tons of potential for character, whether that means adding curtains, installing sconces, or applying some paneling. These spaces are a great way to make reading special for your and your family.

Share the Chair

Since not all of us have the luxury of space and time, fully designed benches may not be possible for everyone. That’s why we love the idea of creating a reading space with carefully selected pieces. A leather armchair with a fuzzy throw and a vintage library lamp sound like heaven to us! This style of reading space relies on the textures and cohesion of the pieces. Start with choosing an armchair, a floor lamp, a pillow, a throw, and a piece of artwork. It’s a small area to really hone in on luxurious elements and make every moment there memorable.

Take it Outside

Some of us may have already started hibernating for the winter and have no plans of redesigning until the summer. If this sounds like you, maybe try to take advantage of the warm weather and design a space outdoors! As Canadians, we love to make the most of the summer, and that includes spending hours outside in the evening, lounging with a glass of wine and a good book. Our favourite outdoor nooks include a garden swing and a hanging chair! They both bring the comfort of inside to the great outdoors!

Design Tip: When possible, try to have a light source and a table nearby. Not only is this practical, but it also helps your design; the look will give you the layered feel that makes a design three-dimensional.
