Weekly Design Inspiration: Pillow Size Guide

It’s no secret … I love pillows.

When it comes to selecting pillows for your space, you’ll want to consider a few things; such as the colour palette, patterns, and material you use.

You definitely want your pillows to feel substantial enough, without being overpowering. You don’t want them to be too small either.

Design Tip:  A 20-inch pillow is a safe size that you can’t go wrong with. If you want to incorporate different sizes, you absolutely can. Use larger anchoring pillows near the back and smaller pillows near the front.

One important detail that I can’t stress enough is the insert fill.  I only recommend feather or down. (a mixture of the two is also fine). Polyester doesn’t provide the same movement and becomes clumpy over time.

Use inserts that are 1-2 inches larger than your pillow cover. (I usually go 2 inches larger.) So for example, with a 22 inch square cover, use a 24 inch square insert. Going larger with the inserts makes for a more voluminous, high-end look.

When it comes to beds, I love to incorporate Euro size pillows (26x26 inches) as well as lumber pillows

For a single chair, use a single lumber or a single 20-22 inch size.

Design Tip: If you have a chaise, you can add two pillows of varying sizes - such as 22 and 20 inch.

On a sofa, nook, or bench, 22-24 inch pillows at the back are best and then layer in smaller pillows such as a 20 inch in the front.
