We’re Building a House!
Today’s blog is a little different. I have some very exciting news to share–my husband and I bought property!! A little over 5 acres to be exact. The best part? We’re building a custom home and I’m about to bring you along for the ride.
Now let me be clear, even though it was my husband Kevin’s dream to live in the country without a neighbour in sight, it wasn’t exactly what I had envisioned for myself. But I have to be honest, the more we visit, the more I fall in love with the peace and tranquility it offers. I won’t lie, I am a little concerned with the internet situation (no high speed currently available) but, I suppose we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it…right?!?
Since we first started telling people that we were going to build, we’ve heard time and time again: “I hope your marriage survives building a home.” I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised though. I deal with clients building, renovating and completing additions all the time. It is called divorce dust for a reason ;)
In all seriousness, building will definitely bring about its challenges. There are a ton of decisions to be made and a lot of money to be spent. I am very lucky that Kevin trusts me completely and doesn’t really care what I do with the house, as long as he gets his ginormous garage.
Of course, it is stressful knowing that every single decision comes down to me. I can easily design for everyone else, but when it comes to myself I have the tendency to be a bit indecisive to say the least. Believe it or not, it’s a well known fact that designers often struggle designing their own homes!
building a custom home: part one
It is possible to buy preexisting blueprints from various firms or online, but we had a more specific vision in mind. I wanted to ensure that our home would be unique and suited to us, so we hired Elyse McCurdy Home Design to help with the process. I can not recommend her enough!! Elyse is amazing, and she is actually designing a few homes for clients of mine as well.
This process is not quick, this stage of the project will take approximately 6 months.
We initially met with Elyse (virtually, because of course we are doing this during a pandemic) to discuss the project, size, scale, location and all my wants and needs - oh and budget.
Elyse then magically took all that information away and started to work on the schematic design, which entails hours of work.
After a few weeks, we received her first design concept for our new home. Since then we’ve been working back on forth, fine tuning the floor plan and we love it!
But in case you missed it above, I’ll remind you that I can be a bit indecisive and I want to make sure we get it just right, so there could be a round two (or three) plan development that occurs before I fully commit.
Don’t worry, I’ll bring you along as we move forward but for now you can follow along here or by following our hashtag #thecpdhouse
