Weekly Design Inspiration: Paint Colours

Oh, how I love paint!! I mean, it really is a life changing product that makes our lives so much better and all for a reasonable price.

Ok, well let me clarify …  it makes our life better AFTER we’ve finally chosen a colour. Until then, choosing the right colour can feel like one of the hardest decisions of your life, am I right?

If you saw my instagram post from early this week, I shared that now is the perfect time to get your paint on (if you are going to DIY).

Some of us have a lot of extra, free time and so many companies, big and small are stepping up to the plate and offering free delivery. However, before I go any further let me say that if you have never painted before, now is not the time to start! Hiring a professional is always recommended.

I’ve had so many people reach out over the last few weeks - it seems that you are all tired of your homes and are looking for change. Now I’ll be honest, paint is usually the final decision that I make - after all of the other finishes and fabrics have been selected, but if you’re only looking to change your wall colour right now or perhaps paint a piece of furniture, then keep reading.

Before I share some of my favourite colours, I do want to give you a bit of advice. Please TRY IT OUT before taking the full colour plunge. Paint sample boards for yourself (you can use a large piece of paper, card stock or foam board) or paint directly on the wall before you paint the entire room. Then take a couple of days to observe the colour. Natural and artificial light can change the look dramatically, so see how you like it in the morning, afternoon and evening. You want to get this right!

Ok, let’s dig in…

White

I’m asked about white paint constantly. One of my new favourites is Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore. It’s warm and welcoming and pairs well with other creamy tones.

Gray

When it comes to gray, you need to be careful. It can be tricky to find an option that doesn’t read too blue. One of my go to’s is Stonington Gray by Benjamin Moore. It’s not too light and it’s not too dark … it’s just right!

Black

If you dare (which I highly recommend) don’t be afraid to paint a room black. One colour that’s worth checking out is Soot by Benjamin Moore. I recently painted a home office this colour and it turned out amazing. It does (depending on the light) have a blue undertone to it, so again Test Test Test.

Blue

If you’re looking for a versatile blue, then try Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy. It’s a great transitional colour and offers the perfect mix of cool and warm tones & pairs beautifully with wood.
