Weekly Design Inspiration: New England Charm
From time to time we can start to feel like we can’t possibly keep up with one more trend. That is when we turn to the classics like the New England look. Cool colours, family heirlooms, and excellent art are all defining features of look. Although the style may be tweaked from time to time, the heart of the look remains the same. Today we’ll cover how to transform your entryway, living room, and dining room into historic spaces fit for a modern family.
Entryways
Entryways are the greeting places for family and friends and are the best way to introduce someone to you and your home. Start by choosing a feature table. This is likely where you’ll put your keys so it helps to have storage but consider choosing something with legs that can effectively communicate your style quickly. Paneling is a great option for a stately home while a muted colour is a fun option for a charming country home. This style favours symmetry so think of tall lamps and books. For a relaxed look pair mismatched vases with a variety of accessories and statues.
Living Rooms
Often living rooms are the spaces where families hang out together, but that doesn’t mean that you need to sacrifice style! Look for traditional furniture silhouettes with features like sock arms and fabrics with dainty floral patterns. For a classic look, have all of your fabrics coordinate with one another. A modern take on the style would mean mixing patterns and playing with colours.
Dining Rooms
With our busy lives it feels like any chance that we all get to sit down at one table is something worth celebrating. Choose high-back chairs for your side chairs and larger, upholstered chairs to flank either end of the table. A big piece of art or a stunning chandelier is exactly what will set the space off. Be sure to have a centerpiece or two depending on your table length.
Design Tip: Scale is your best friend when trying to create an awe-inspiring room. Statuesque table lamps, oversized rugs, and perfectly proportioned sofas are all key elements for a New England home.
