Weekly Design Inspiration: Dark Academia

One of our favourite things about new seasons is that they always bring about changes in trends. Dark Academia has been on the rise for the past year, but is truly starting to come into its own this spring. The trend is rooted in romanticizing old English schools and impressive manors from great literature. We’re going to show you how you can incorporate this trend into your libraries, dining rooms, and living spaces!

Book It!

Ok, we know that not everyone has a library in their home, but that doesn't mean that you can’t get the same effect! If you don’t have a room dedicated to your books, then try doing a DIY project to get the built-in bookcase look! Add some moulding and paint the shelves and your walls the same colour for the added aesthetic touch. If you’re lucky enough to have a library, consider staining your millwork in a mid-deep tone and throw in a leather reading chair.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?

If you want to impress all of your friends with a charming dinner party, you first have to make it the moody room of your dreams! Well-worn tables and mismatched chairs will only add to the look of the centuries-old drama. Go for a statement vintage dining fixture to truly set the mood. Doilies and lace window treatments add some levity to the room without breaking character.

Live and Let Live

Long ago, living rooms were where many great families would retire after a long day. After all of these years, nothing much has changed. To create the look you want, consider textures like velvet, leather, wood, and brass. Also think about what components make up the room. A fireplace is a great feature for warmth, but if you don’t have one, use other elements like tapestries and rugs to get the same effect.

Design Tip: One of the key parts to the Dark Academia look is the accessories. Plants, books, artwork, and candles are essential to create the theatrical vibe. Use matte paint to create a calm backdrop!
