Weekly Design Inspiration: Cut a Rug
Ok, so you’ve got the house, you’ve got the furniture, and you’ve got the décor, but there is still something missing. That little bit of warmth. Rugs can definitely be an investment piece, but they will last for years and be the centrepiece of your room. With so many online and in-person options, people are beginning to see the versatility of rugs. Whether you’re all about the texture, want to add some depth, or are looking for that one showstopper, there’s options for all uses out there.
Feel it Out
For those of us who are drawn to neutrals over bolder colour choices, texture is one of the best methods to achieve a layered look. Texture can come in many shapes and sizes, using techniques like cut pile, knots, and tassels. It’s important to think about your day to day life when considering textured rugs. For example, a knotted wool rug would look great in almost any space, and it’s dreamy to step on. If you have pets, you may want to avoid rug options with tassels as they might see it as their new favourite chew toy. Not to worry though; there are so many options out there that I can safely say that you won’t have to sacrifice style for practicality.
The More the Merrier
If you like a cozier, casual look, consider doubling up on your rugs. In this case, more is more. Try to juxtapose two styles of rug. For the minimalist, that might mean that you throw a hide over a natural rug. For those of us looking for more drama, choose a larger simple rug to act as a border under a fun, patterned rug, emphasizing the colours. Not only does this give you more elements to play off of in the room; it also makes the room feel larger.
Hang it Up
What if you already have floor rugs and are still looking for more? Hanging rugs as art is not a new technique, tapestries have been lining hallways for centuries. There are even rugs that are designed more for art purposes rather than to be walked on. You could have an old vintage rug that you love that you want to preserve, or you might find a complementary rug to the one already in the room. This is also an opportunity to play with scale. You can choose anything from a small, circular 3’ rug to a larger 8’x10’ rug.
Design Tip: If you’re looking to start a new hobby, try making a piece yourself! People all over the internet have made how-to videos showcasing techniques and patterns. It’s a beautiful way to make a meaningful piece of art for your house, and you can ensure that the colours and pattern will be right for the space.
