Weekly Design Inspiration: Countertop Surfaces

With the wide range of surfaces available on the market today, counter tops can be overwhelming to choose from. It’s important to be educated on the options available in order to make the best decision for your home or workplace. The durability, maintenance requirements and price point all come into consideration when making this decision.

Marble

With timeless appeal, this stone gives any kitchen a decidedly high-end look. Heat resistant and classic it’s by far my favourite. Although, you need to know that it is porous so it will require sealing and it can stain and etch.

Quartz

Quartz is a man made surface that is resistant to staining, scratches and heat. I love the array of colours and options that it comes in. It’s also a non-porous surface which means there is no sealing required.

It’s very practical, durable and easy to maintain. I use quartz in 95% of my client projects.

Soapstone

This surface is dense and non-porous and small scratches can be disguised with mineral oil. It’s typically found in gray tones with varying veining patterns but can be enhanced by applying an ager and wax for a saturated/darker result.

Butcher Block

Butcher block adds warmth to your space and is easy to install and repair - what more could you ask for?! It’s sanitary when properly sealed and adds so much character. It’s also gorgeous when mixed with other surfaces.

Concrete

The nice thing with concrete is that it is almost completely customizable down to the thickness, edges, colour and texture.

It does require sealing and will patina over time. Concrete countertops definitely add a one of a kind look to your space.

Granite

Spills can be wiped up quickly, but granite does require sealing. Available in both polished or matte finishes, in a wide range of colours and variations (many which I personally find too busy), granite can add a unique finish to your space. A classic black is always an option; like this leathered granite which is beyond fabulous.

Laminate

Inexpensive, easy to install, and so much better-looking than you probably remember, thanks to new printing technology and decorative edges. By far the most budget-friendly option, laminate countertops are having a resurgence in popularity thanks to new patterns that resemble natural stone, wood or even quartz at a fraction of the cost
