Weekly Design Inspiration: Collect them All!
As with all things in fashion, trends go in and out of style. I’m sure many of us remember parents’ and grandparents’ houses filled with knick knacks, spoon collections and heirlooms. Well, maximalism is back and ready to take on the design world. So, if you have any passions, whether they be niche or general, it’s time to show the world! In this blog, we will show you how to display everything from records, to collectibles, to baskets in a way that feels relevant to this century.
Put Your Record On!
When it comes to collections, records are definitely a fan favourite. There’s nothing quite like a well-loved record with its edges worn off a bit. The warmth of the sound translates to the feeling that you get looking at your collection. Many artists still take album art seriously, understanding that displays are essential for many record owners. If you’re limited on space, hang up some floating shelves with a lip. If you’re ok to dedicate some space to your collection, have lit display shelves with closed record storage underneath.
Nerd Alert!
Not all collections can be displayed so easily. Some collections like figurines and natural pieces, require a bit more thought. Some pieces can only be fully appreciated when viewed from all angles. You can tackle this obstacle in a few ways. One would be to have full scale display cases accessible from multiple sides. You can add spotlights to add to the effect and be sure to install adjustable shelves for your ever-growing display. If you can’t commit to that many display areas, consider wall-hung boxes to display your pieces. Before installing, check that your wall is structurally sound and that the case can withstand the weight of the piece.
A-Tisket-a-Tasket
Not all collections are as obvious as others. Some pieces, like canvases and baskets, fit more seamlessly into your space. Because these pieces are more traditional by nature, consider displaying them in untraditional ways to create a fresh look. Hang the pieces in an organic pattern that emphasizes movement. If you already have pieces on the wall, create a vignette with pieces varying in scale to create interest.
Design Tip: No matter what your collection is, always ensure that you have enough space for your pieces. Cramming objects together is outdated. Space your pieces out to enhance them and create a sense of luxury.
