Weekly Design Inspiration: Big and Burly

The trend we’re taking on this week is beloved for so many reasons; warm wood tones, vintage elements, and durability all come to mind. So it’s not a shock when we say that we are loving burl wood right now! Burl wood is wood that comes from tree growth that has deformations in it which we think is quite poetic. It’s also great that this deformed wood can go on to be used instead of cast aside!

Stay for coffee

Coffee tables are always one of the fun accent pieces that we get to do for homes; traditionally people want to be more conservative with their sofas and chairs so why not add a bit of fun with a funky table? The marbled look hides dirt and imperfections while simultaneously providing the warmth that we love. Since the wood has so much variation it’s a great piece to have if you’re trying to coordinate a few different colours!

i love your accent

If you are trying to avoid the look of a matching set in the bedroom or living room, try out a burl wood accent piece! Whether it’s an end table or a nightstand, these one-of-a-kind pieces make a statement and scream designer. If you’re nervous about the piece being too bold opt for something with an open feeling to it as opposed to a heavier silhouette. Avoid putting anything too busy around these pieces since they’re small and pack a punch.

dressed up

We are loving the idea of burl wood dressers right now! Often dressers are placed at the end of the bed and are one of the first and last things you see every day; that’s why we think that it should be a work of art. You can take this look in so many directions whether you like traditional, modern, or mid-century.

Design Tip: If you’re ordering a piece online then expect variation from the piece that you see online; burl wood is unique and each piece of wood will stain differently. The overall tones and range of shades should be the same but don’t take the pictures too literally.
