Weekly Design Inspiration: Window Design–Trends and Inspiration
The grass is frosty, the weather is forecasting for snow and the neighbours are anxiously getting their Christmas lights up before it gets too cold to stand being outside.
I am cozy next to my front window, watching it all happen and dreaming about window placement and styles for the CPD home. It got me thinking that even if you’re not designing a home from scratch, you can still update your windows to modernize your home. Older homes tend to have windows that need replacing. Seals break causing condensation in the glass, and they lose their insulative properties. Rock chips and neighbour Billy’s baseball can also be a great excuse to change up the look.
Design trends for windows come and go. In the 90s, large bay windows and picture windows took the front seat. The emphasis was on the view outside and less about what was in front of it. I absolutely love picture windows but only when there is something nice to look at outside of it.
Not every view is worth that picture though. Design trends of 2020 and beyond favour something different. Windows are now being used to provide an additional layer of design between the interior and exterior of your home.
Take a look at the pictures below and consider if any of these design trends pique your interest!
Bow windows are making a resurgence. Made from equal-sized panes, bow windows can take the place of a large bay window. Muntins and mullions (the lines that form the grid) can be used to obscure the sightline and bring your attention to the interior of your room.
If you still want to see your garden, but still want to elevate your look, consider grids along the top of the window. Black window frames complement the interior furniture and provide a nice contrast to the white window sash.
Grids may be all over your Instagram feed but that doesn't mean they are always the answer. The view from this dining room is worthy of a clear view. Instead, to elevate the look, consider natural wood casings and sills.
Antique window latches elevate the look of these windows. Small details like this can really surprise you with the impact they have.
I have always loved bay windows with a bench… But this look tops it. By removing the side windows, there’s a place to lean back against the wall so you can cozy up and read a book in this cozy nook.
I hope this design inspiration has been helpful to anyone looking to replace or upgrade their windows.
