Weekly Design Inspiration: The Backyard Retreat

As with almost all Canadians, we try to spend as much time outside as possible once the weather gets warmer. We love being outside with our friends and family and we love having an outdoor space that’s ready to entertain and delight! That’s why we are loving what we’re seeing when it comes to backyard designs lately. We’re going to show you some of our favourite ways to elevate the outdoor experience!

light the way

If you know anything about us, it’s that we believe in the power of lighting. This also applies to the great outdoors! Spending evenings outdoors means that you need ways to illuminate your space. For larger areas, we are big fans of hanging string lighting across the backyard so that every night is a starry night. If you’re looking to create more stunning vignettes then we cannot recommend oversized lanterns enough. They feel more whimsical than the typical bollards and they have the added advantage of being extremely portable! Pop in some remote-controlled flameless candles and you’ve got a movie scene setup. However, one our favourite pieces in-store right now is our Como Portable Lamp! You can bring it outside for your al fresco dinners and easily charge it back up with a USB. We love that this lamp makes outdoor lighting more intimate and homey!

inside out

We love to be comfortable and cozy no matter what time of year it is. That’s why we could not be happier to see some indoor silhouettes making their way outdoors. Although we still love a good wicker chair, we can’t deny the allure of a plush upholstered chair that’s ready for an afternoon of reading. We expect to see a lot more indoor-inspired pieces gracing Canadian backyards soon as they suit our cooler evenings so well!

water toys

Whenever possible, we love to connect our designs back to nature. That’s why we will always push for a water feature, whether it be a fountain or a pond. We think that having a water feature has so many benefits, from its soothing sounds to its interactivity, it’s the perfect design element no matter your age. Additionally, it can suit a variety of homes, from timeless estates to cottage-inspired retreats, depending on the feature that you go for!

Design Tip: Although we love a good patio stone, we can’t resist the beauty of a pea gravel terrace! You don’t have to worry about uneven chairs and it’s also great for little ones. Plus, a nice off-white or almond colour mentally transports us to an Italian villa!
