Weekly Design Inspiration: Terracotta on the Terrace
Every time we see a Spanish home, we fall in love a little bit more. A large part of the style’s allure is thanks to all of its textural elements. Even though terracotta has gone in and out of vogue over the past few decades we can definitely say that it is back and in a big way! There are so many ways to use this versatile product that will make your house Cali cool.
Back to Back
The idea of mixing cooking with a global style staple like terracotta seems to only make sense. We love the rustic charm that terracotta brings to such a communal area like the kitchen. Use a glossy terracotta as a backsplash for an easy to clean solution for the family or choose an unglazed terracotta floor for a rural feel. Pair with other natural materials like natural stone and wood to complete the look.
On the Outs
We’ve definitely noticed a lot more people paying attention to their backyard and how they want their outdoor space to feel. We totally encourage the idea of creating a multi-purpose backyard if possible. We dine outdoors almost exclusively come summer and having a terracotta courtyard seems like a European dream! If you don’t have a place for pavers, then incorporate terracotta using planters and paint!
Bathe in It
Few spaces embody the idea of an at-home oasis like a bathroom. It’s where we set our intentions for the day, prepare for our nightly routine, and enjoy the occasional glass of wine in the bathtub. The bathroom is a great space to use a unique tile like terracotta. Don’t be afraid to experiment with unique shapes and patterns and mix and match with other handmade tiles!
Design Tip: Personally, we love when materials develop a patina, but if you want to keep your tiles looking new, opt for something glazed.
